TheAnimalBehaviorCenter.com - I wanted to update some of our progress with Koko's training. Koko is a 28+-year-old umbrella cockatoo that was given to us by a zoo. He's here to stay. I began working with him at a zoo a few years ago and started out with off-contact training that eventually turned into protective-contact training. I am currently able to do several things with Koko but it is so important for his health and future for other people to be able to do what I am doing with him. This is one of our volunteers, Lindsay Douglas who is helping me with Koko's training. Lindsay needs to know what Koko is communicating via his body language so she's been training him via protective-contact through the cage bars calling him from perch to perch and looking for calm body language and movements while reinforcing. This may not look like much progress but this is huge progress. Koko used to lunge while taking treats. After this video, we went inside his enclosure for off-contact target and recall training. Koko likes to nest on the floor, which we don't encourage due to the behavior and health issues often associated with it. The more the volunteers are training Koko, the more we are finding him on his perches waiting for another training session. When we know better, we do better.
